TOKiMONSTA - Midnight Menu (2010)

A great electronic hip hop album from Korean-American producer TOKiMONSTA (Jennifer Lee). Midnight Menu a nice blend of hip hop and jazz, somewhere between Flying Lotus and Nujabes with its experimentation and its sampling. It's very relaxed music, and the whole album gives off the a very futuristic atmosphere, almost a more romantic side of a smoky low key bar or late night diner in a distant cyberpunk setting.

I don't really have as much to say about each individual track, though the one vocal track on the album, Solitary Joy (feat. Shuanise), is very easily a high point on the album, like a live performance stirring up the atmosphere in the bar for a short while, getting the few people to wake up and tune into the music. At the same time though, as the title would suggest, it gives you the feeling of being alone in a nearly empty bar, with no one to talk to but yourself, the very reflection of loneliness, and the introspective thoughts that tend to come with it.

Midnight Menu is an album that creates a whole world for one to get lost in with its ambient soundscapes that are equal parts nostalgic and futuristic. A great album if you want to just relax and unwind after a long day.
